Miscellaneous Useful Mathematics
[Video Introduction] (coming soon)
These tutorials cover some mathematical topics that are particularly useful in computer science, but often aren’t included in standard discrete mathematics topics. Some of these are a review of topics you have probably seen before, and others (like estimation with powers of two) provide specific techniques and tricks that you probably have not seen before. Here is an overview of the main tutorials:
Useful Functions (under development): Some functions are used extensively in computer science, such as logarithms and floors or ceilings, that are standard math topics but receive limited attention in basic algebra courses. In this tutorial we cover these functions carefully and work through some examples and problems that show how they are used in computer science.
Powers of Two: Computer science relies heavily on powers of two and their inverse, base two logarithms. This is partly because computers work in binary (or base two), and partly because partitioning data in half, as many algorithms do, naturally leads to base two logarithms. In this tutorial, we introduce some “tricks” that can make your computer science work easier and more intuitive.
These topics can be taken in order or independently.
